What a "sweet" way to start my day!

One of my brides, Megan B., lives in Washington, D.C. and surprised me with this gorgeous box from Georgetown Cupcake.....and it wasn't just the box!

Inside are a dozen assorted flavor cupcakes, so well packaged that even though the box came to me upside down, via Fed Ex, they weren't in the least smooshed. (Is that a word?)

My staff quickly told me of the buzz about this this shop and it's spotlight on the TLC Network. I look forward to learning more about the source...as I savor the sweets this evening at home.

Though the gift was wonderful, the words of her enclosure card touched me:

"Dear Mike,

I thank you for the experience of finding the perfect dress. I have no words for your endless kindness and generosity. I hope you enjoy a slice of DC!

By a "dating coincidence" was a Plus One guest at her parents' wedding 33 years ago!! Since that time, I have dressed several brides in the family. It was fun to see both of her Grandmothers with her the day we ordered her bridal gown.

The joy of being in business such a long time is the rich reward of such relationships.

Paying it forward...one bridal gown at a time!

Proud. Honored. Inspired. These are all words that describe how we feel as a result of our partnership with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Each one of us here at Nolte's Bridal has the privilege of seeing that ear-to-ear smile that can only come from finding "the dress". We see this every day, and it's why we do what we do. It's only right that we give as many girls as possible that chance; to look in the mirror and see how beautiful they are. And who doesn't love a fabulous designer gown?!

We donated multiple gowns to St. Jude's for patients as they celebrate one of the most hallowed events of teen life: prom. Patients and their siblings, ages 13 to 24, are invited to the event, organized by the St. Jude Child Life department. And a proper prom needs proper formal attire, yes? That's where we come in.

Here's a portion of a letter we received from Dr. Stephen Smith, Medical Director at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital/ Midwest Affiliate (pictured below). "I have enclosed thank you notes and pictures of the St. Jude patients with the gowns that they selected. You not only brought tears of joy to these patients, but tears of thanksgiving from the staff. We are constantly inspired by our patients' strength, hope and determination. To see them wearing a prom dress during and after their difficult journey is a miracle."

Who Attended the KC Weddings Bridal Spectacular?

Here at Nolte's Bridal, we know the KC Weddings Bridal Spectacular show this past Saturday was well attended...because we were swamped all day with brides saying they were glad to be out of the crowd!

January is always a busy wedding gown selling month in Kansas City but trade show days really pack in the brides. It helps that Nolte's Bridal is located just three minutes from the Overland Convention Center.

Bridal shows like the KC Weddings Bridal Spectacular can be a large, overwhelming experience and our niche has always been to be more understated and a quality experience for the bride who isn't a big bridal show fan. But I do think it's a good show and am considering participating in the future.

The Kansas City Star and KC Weddings always do a nice job organizing the Bridal Spectacular. I would like to hear from brides who attended that show. Do you think Nolte's Bridal would be a good fit there? If you tell me "Yes," let me know what you'd like to see from us there - a full display of gowns, live models, lookbooks, wedding planning portfolios? What else?

Blowout Sale at Nolte's Bridal - Saturday, February 4, 2012

”It’s what we’re used to…”

The wedding of Jen and Scott was probably one of the smoothest and most stress-free weddings I have coordinated in years. Reason? The obvious love between not just the couple but also between the bride and groom and each of their families of origin.

They kept “their moment” of seeing one another completely authentic. They traveled in separate limos to the church and Scott was standing at the end of the aisle when the exterior doors swung wide…..and he glimpsed his bride for the first time as her father escorted her into the church. The guests reflected afterwards that they were literally holding their breath. They said it was as if they were in a movie.

The couple didn’t need any posing suggestions from me or the photographers…they kept holding hands, hugging, looking at each other, laughing and their smiles were non-stop!

As the post-ceremony photos started being assembled, I thought to myself, “Well here goes the bubble of bliss.” (As usually happens when we are trying to accommodate many generations, many egos, many old hurtful dynamics and often crying babies. Ugh!)

And I could not have been more wrong. The Weiss and Seyller families were smiling, joking, completely compatible and never missed a cue. What a blessing! What brand of cereal were they fed as babies?!

When Jen called me the following day, on her way to the airport (for Tahiti!), she wanted to express her appreciation but I could hardly let her finish. I was wanting to thank HER, for the karma/camaraderie exhibited in all her 50 plus extended family members all day long. (Mutual admiration society I guess!)

She was surprised that I was so surprised….and summed it up by saying, “I suspect that we take our closeness for granted. It is just what we are used to.”

I reflected afterwards that the feedback of “It is the most beautiful wedding our guests have ever seen!” is so normal for me, that I think the words apply in reverse, “It’s what I’m used to.” However, I never take it for granted. I love, absolutely love my job. And it’s brides like Jen…and her entire extended family that remind me of how lucky I am.

Autumn Weddings: A Personal Favorite

This evening I have the pleasure of directing my last wedding of October and what a fun experience it will be. Jen and Scott have always had their priorities straight in what makes for a memorable celebration…..their affection for each other and the inclusion of their families.

They wisely trusted the minutia of the logistics and the vendor hiring to me and as a result they have enjoyed every day of the engagement (their words!)

Perhaps it is the relaxation too that comes with autumn. The trees are brilliant for outdoor pictures…and we’ll stop by Kansas City's gorgeous Loose Park on our way to the church from the InterContinental to grab some of that background glory.

The weather is certainly not sweat producing (like all summer has been!) and with just nip in the air…..the multitude of candles inside will be both warming visually and literally.

As we convoy in black limos (never white at a Nolte wedding!) back to the InterContinental, I know the Rooftop Dining Room will be an impressive setting for the out-of-towners who have never seen our beautiful Plaza from that vantage point.

Here are some pictures of some of my recent favorite Autumn Weddings. All wonderful brides, gorgeous flowers, dramatic lighting, perfectly scripted organization and rave reviews from the appreciative parents. It’s easy to say that wedding coordination is the favorite part of my job!

Voting by committee a.k.a. “Shopping with Posse”

Seems the bridal industry is temporarily ruled by the reality shows that depict “typical” wedding preparations and thus today’s bride think they must do what they see on W.E. Network to fully have “the bride experience.” May I beg you to reconsider?

In every sector of the wedding world, the professionals are saying that a consistent buzz kill for them and the bride is the concept of “Shopping with Posse.” There are simply too many opinions and the bride ends up buying nothing because:

She wants to honor all the opinions offered…and there are plenty
It’s time to have a money talk with her mother and that can’t happen in front of others.
She gets so confused that she is over-whelmed and needs to make time for another appointment…and essentially start over.

The brides who are welcomed in all bridal salons are those that know their own taste, bring the person who is writing the check and are open minded to the advice of the consultant who can suggest fabrics and silhouettes that are best for her venue and body.

All brides will have their “Say Yes” moment….and it’s so cool when that is still regarded as a personal moment as opposed to a spectator sport. At Nolte’s we always have a special thank you for the brides that allow us to do our job in a manner that evokes comments like “THIS is what I had hoped my shopping experience would be. You have made it so wonderful! Thank you!”

Architect’s Field Day a.k.a Buying Trip

Like most of the high-end store owners…the New York market calls to us this weekend. The perceived “glamour” of “going to New York on a buying trip” has long faded in the dozens of times I have made the trip, but the thing that never recedes is the excitement of seeing long-time friends.

Over the last three decades in becoming known in the bridal industry, I have not only developed a fondness for many of the sales reps but of course have a personal friendship with many of the designers. I know that for some of them, my visit is a litmus test of “How will this gown be perceived by the public?” It’s sometimes a bit awkward for me though, as the newbies watch and wait to hear my feedback. (Sometimes it is like one of the competition reality shows i.e. Celebrity Apprentice, American Idol, Iron Chef, Cake Boss when an expert does an evaluation.)

I always try to couch my remarks with two positive things for every not-so-positive comment. (No Simon Cowell in Michael Nolte!)

But the couture guys can miss the mark by just a little bit and sometimes suggesting a tweak takes a gown that is “almost fabulous” to “over the top amazing.” I have always felt I was a frustrated architect at heart and this construction project is very fulfilling.

If the comments can’t be offered in the showroom (because of other buyers present), inevitably they ask during a private dinner or cocktail gathering after the showrooms close. It’s an interesting back story to how the gowns come to be.

I can’t wait to see some of the new stuff, re-load our popular jewelry cases and treat a couple of fabulous employees to the treat of the Buying Trip experience for the first time.

WEDDING NOTES™ – Disinvited

Before Kim K. few ever used this word. The news said that she had to cut 50 of the previously invited wedding guests due to “space issues”. How is this possible? How awkward is this! But it has happened to brides before, but it doesn’t usually happen this close to the event day. Kim K’s solution seems to have been to cut from her stepfather’s extended family and to review those now famous “plus ones”.

Making these calls to the guests involved are hard. Maybe the bride herself could do some, maybe her mother or the groom’s mother could call or even the maid of honor could make the calls on behalf of the bride. Someone in the wedding party who knows the guest (s) who are about to be “disinvited” should deliver the bad news.

Family members – extended or not – can usually be counted on to be the most understanding and accommodating. Guests to whom a “plus one” has been extended may find it a bit awkward. “Plus ones” refer to single guests who have been given the approval to bring a guest of choice unknown to the bride or groom.

This situation can be complicated when brides enthusiastically order lots of “save the date” cards as soon as they get engaged and set a date but before they have done any serious thinking about venues or budgets. Save the date cards imply that an invitation will follow as the date gets closer so many guests begin to think of them as “mini invites”. We recommend that key decisions be made before the cards are sent out and that a preliminary guest list or at least rough estimate of guest counts be set prior to sending out these cards.

We also recommend that the bride send save the date cards only to those persons they know they must have at their wedding and reception and who may have to travel to attend. They really shouldn’t be used as excited “I got engaged and need to tell the world” cards.

WEDDING NOTES™ – What Should I Do?

Here at Nolte's Bridal we gladly help our brides with awkward situations that don’t necessarily make their way into etiquette books. In spite of all the advice available from so many resources, brides like to have an experienced specialist – a knowledgeable consultant, a certified wedding planner- available for face-to-face problem solving. Our staff is available for your unexpected problems and issues. Every wedding is unique and so can the problems presented by the people factor. This is a question we are repeatedly asked.

How do I handle guests who have responded to our invitations and state on the reply card that the number of guests planning to attend is larger than the number invited?

If your count and budget can handle the number of “extras” indicated, chalk it up to bad manners of those guests and just greet them with as much good grace as you can muster. If your count is already pushing you over the budget and you truly cannot absorb the extra folks, we suggest that you turn to your maid of honor, tactful bridesmaid or family member who knows the offending guests well. Ask this person to call the guests in question and explain that the bride would love to be able to expand her guest list, but unfortunately it is not possible. The reason? Budget, time or space concerns! If the person is offended – and some will be – they are not true friends. They are the ones who have overstepped the etiquette boundaries.

Often, the “extras” are uninvited children. You can keep this from happening if the reception card reads, “adult only reception”. Or you can arrange for children to be at a “separate” reception somewhere in the same venue. You provide a number of “sitters”, a giant screen TV, movies, lots of craft items and separate menu handled by family members.

WEDDING NOTES™ – Do Couples Still Register?

The answer is a resounding yes! What has changed somewhat is the variety of stores and shops that now provide a bridal registry service. We have learned that many brides appreciate a little advice on what to do before they make registration selections. In spite of the publicity being given to some celebrity brides and their “news making” registry choices, the act of selecting registry sources and gift ideas are not just “gift grabs” as one of our brides recently stated. Properly used, gift registries are a true service for your wedding guests. Guests have the assurance of knowing they are giving a gift that will be cherished, as well as the comfort of knowing that their gift is less likely to be duplicated.

Our first bit of advice is to reassure the bride that registry is “still being done”.

Next we remind the bride that the items chosen will be a part of their lives for years to come, so choices should not be made in haste – nor should they be made without the groom’s input.

We urge couples to make their choices in a timely manner so that friends and relatives have time to purchase the gifts for pre wedding events as well as the wedding itself.

If you have many friends and family who live in a different area from you and the groom, we advise our brides to include a gift registry source with a national reach. Most retailers have on line ordering, shipping and registry recording. Today, most registries are electronic and the bride’s choices are recorded for her along with guest purchases as they are made.

Please don’t let anyone advise you that it is ok to include registry information in your invitation. IT IS NOT! Many things may have changed about weddings, but this has not been one of them. It has always been in poor taste and remains so. Because most brides create their own wedding web site, you can certainly list registry sites there.

Today’s gift registries may be more sophisticated than the early versions, but the goal of getting information to your guests and helping them make a wonderful selection for you is the same.

WEDDING NOTES™ – Time Management

Here at Nolte's Bridal we assist our brides with all aspects of their wedding plans. One of our continuing requests is for help in managing the time between the ceremony and the reception.

One of our first suggestions is that the travel time for guests moving from the location of the ceremony to the start of the reception be minimized. Take it into account when booking the reception venue. Guests shouldn’t have to drive more that 20-30 minutes.

We urge our brides to take as many of their photographs as possible prior to the ceremony and to minimize the number to be taken after the ceremony. Insure that guests who arrive at the reception site before the wedding party, are greeted by the official host and hostess of the reception. The names of these hosts should be listed in the program.

While awaiting the arrival of the wedding group, the guests should be served beverages and appetizers. Music should be playing when the guests arrive. Be sure that a coat check is available, that the gift table is in plain sight with a person assigned to manage the table. Do have someone available to help with seating plans.

Once the bridal entourage arrives at the reception site, the bandleader or maitre d’ or reception host should ask the seated guests to stand while he/she introduces the party. Since the bride and groom are the evening’s stars, they should be introduced last. Introductions and entrances flow in this order: first the parents of the bride, then the parents of the groom, followed by the “little people” (depending on their ages), bridesmaids and groomsmen, and the maid of honor and best man. Once the bridal party is in place, then the bride and groom are introduced and make their grand entrance.

Make sure that the names are double checked for pronunciation and that information is passed on to the person in charge or reception host.

WEDDING NOTES™ – Following Ceremony Guidelines

While the majority of today’s brides are intent on having a wedding that reflects their unique tastes and personalities, the one place they may run into opposition is the place chosen for the ceremony. Unless you are having the ceremony in your own backyard, the chances are excellent that whatever site you have chosen, there will be “guidelines” that you must observe.

Commercial establishments will offer suggestions for what works best in their experience, but are generally more flexible in their attempts to accommodate your unique requests. Public parks and spaces have general operating rules that you must follow. Courthouses and other government buildings have hours and policies that all must adhere to. But churches also have wedding policies that must be followed. Each church will have its own procedures, but in general, expect these policies or at least versions of them,

Typically a church will not allow permanently attached furniture to be moved. You may not like the pew arrangement but you will be expected to work with it. If Kate and William can, so can you.
No tacks or nails can be driven into the woodwork nor can anything be used to deface it.
Saucers and/or mats must be placed under all floral arrangements or greenery that rest on the floor.
All arrangements for music, ceremony input and decorations must be submitted in advance and are subject to the approval of the priest, minister, rabbi or church wedding coordinator.
Floral arrangements or candles that must be taped to the pew ends are likely to be forbidden.
A church may require that its organist be utilized.
A church may require that no pictures be taken during the ceremony. Your photographer needs to know this in advance.
Common sense says that no trash be left behind in the building so you should appoint a dressing room assistant who makes sure that all bags and related apparel items are removed.

If you have not been provided with a set of guidelines for the venue you have chosen for your ceremony, be sure to ask for clarification.

WEDDING NOTES™– Reception Notes

Because the reception is usually the single largest expense in any wedding, lots has been written about it. Much of the lore of receptions represents an historical or traditional flavor. But times have changed. The economy is different. The bride and groom are different and the focus on the reception as the celebratory segment of a wedding event has changed somewhat.

One assumes that the commitment to another person inherent in the engagement process, is binding. However, like the Crystal Harris plan to marry Hugh Hefner, it is always subject to change. Crystal canceled her wedding plans two days before the event. One can only assume that there were sufficient funds available to cover lost deposits and to issue guest list wide notes of cancellation. But assuming that the wedding and reception went on as planned, these modern notes of advice would have been well received.

Leave the reception before your guests.
It used to be the “rule”. The wedding couple changed into their “traveling clothes” and left the reception to begin their honeymoon. Today’s couples have challenged that tradition and are frequently the last to leave their reception. In some cases, it becomes a waiting game. No one is sure who should leave when, so no one does. One can speculate about the reason for this need to be the last to leave the party, but it can prove awkward. Be gracious and leave before your quests begin to nod off at their tables. It was a super party, but someone has to leave.

Whatever your budget for the reception, DO IT WELL!
If you don’t have the money for a sit down dinner, switch to a buffet. Don’t skimp. Do what you can afford to do beautifully. Switch days, switch times, switch venues – do whatever gives you the most beautiful ceremony and reception within your budget. Don’t try to reach a level that you cannot afford. Skimping always shows.

Let your focus at the reception be on your guests. This is a huge party/celebration you are hosting. And hosting means that the focus is on the guests. The first rule of entertaining guests is to consider their time and attention. That means: cut down the time between the ceremony and the reception. Don’t make them wait several hours between events. If the lag time is two hours, that is too much. Also, work hard to have the venues for the reception and the ceremony close together. Be considerate of your guests and don’t make them drive an hour or more to get from one event to another.

Cut down the guest list. You don’t need to have the area’s largest reception. Invite only those people who matter to you both. Surveys have shown that after several years, couples look at their wedding photos and are amazed by the number of guests that they cannot name. To a person, those couples regret having invited people who really don’t matter to their important event.
If you have changed your mind and don’t want to go through with the wedding,
cancel it earlier rather than later. Don’t pull as Crystal Harris and cancel the wedding to Hugh Hefner two days before the event. Remember the focus on others. The bride isn’t the only star of the day. The groom is a significant player as well. If you two have doubts, work them out or agree to disagree and be gracious hosts.

Monaco Magnificence

Can you believe it? Europe had TWO royal weddings in the same year? And both from countries with special ties to the U.S.

Prince Albert of Monaco, finally (at 53) tied the matrimonial knot with his long time Olympian swimmer girlfriend, Charlene Whittstock, of South Africa on July 2, 2011.

They attended the British royal wedding in April but that newlywed couple was touring Canada and couldn’t return the favor. (But that’s probably a blessing for Charlene. Can you imagine having Kate Middleton as a guest at your wedding?!)

Some of the “royal” similarities were: small all white bouquets, extended trains and of course the beautiful use of blushers (man but that is such a photogenic look. I don’t know why all brides don’t utilize them.)

The grooms both wore uniforms. The attendants were many children and few adults.

The main difference I noticed immediately in my AOL close-up, first released picture of Charlene….she didn’t wear earrings! With access to Princess Grace’s jewelry chest…she didn’t wear earrings?! I almost thought that was surely an over-site. Particularly, when the openings for posts were so obvious.

The second thing of note is that this royal bride had bare arms. I don’t think I have ever seen that! The Armani gown was streamlined, contemporary and sleek. Gorgeous tone on tone beading all over the front panel, a twist portrait neckline but bare arms.

I thought her double train was cool. The longer Watteau (attached at mid-back was detachable and I suspect due to the cut of the dress’s train, it wasn’t bustled but rather draped over her arm a la Jackie Kennedy.

The walk with her father in square outside the church was such a thrill for the on-lookers! And provided lots of gown exposure. The 23 priests and three cardinals presented a very holy backdrop for this Catholic Mass but I know the day was marred by the rumor of Albert having fathered yet a third illegitimate child during his engagement to Charlene. That surely explained the lack of smiles.

There was a notable difference in the two royal brides’ countenance.

Charlene seemed determined to “go through with it,” Kate glowed naturally as she took a life changing step that she seemed to fully embrace.

WEDDING NOTES™– Beautiful Brides

And we mean beautiful inside as well as outside. The ideal bride-to-be is a charming, glowing, happy individual who sees the world through the traditional rose- colored glasses. Unfortunately, the actions of some of her “sisters”, who may have earned the 21st century media title of “Bridezilla”, tarnish that view of a bride. There is even a TV show of the same name that features brides at their worst.

We want our brides to be happy, plan the wedding of their dreams, but we also want them to be the focus of warm thoughts from relatives and guests who see her at her very best – gracious and focused on others. The best bride is one who does not focus on herself only but who shares her happiness with family and friends. We have to believe that no one wants to be referred to as “Bridezilla”. How embarrassing is that?

Here area some areas and behaviors for you – the bride to be - to avoid if you don’t want to wear the reptilian title.

Stop talking about the wedding non- stop. It is good that you have enthusiasm for the upcoming nuptials, but not everyone on the planet is focused on your big day. Get some perspective and realize as one guest stated, “The world is still turning outside of the bride’s wedding realm.” Your wedding is our focus, but not everyone shares that focus.

Realize that a “me first” attitude is unbecoming. People wish you well and want you to be happy, but it is unrealistic to expect everyone within your circle of family and friends will drop everything to focus on your wedding. That is why you have us. We will provide that focus. We help our brides to avoid being a diva and remind them to treat friends and family with care and concern.

We spend time with our brides helping them create the wedding of their dreams. There are a myriad of decisions to be made and many areas that require discussion and then decision. Over the years we have learned that too many couples avoid having one of the most important discussions – a talk about financial matters that impact their lives together beyond the marriage celebration itself.

Some couples can/do talk about all aspects of marriage but balk when the subject of money arises. They discuss children, where to live, dreams for the future and career moves. But for many, their conversations about money focus on the wedding itself and then STOP. We encourage our brides to go further and spend time discussing life finances and figure out if they as a couple are at least on the same page.

In an article in the STAR TRIBUNE on June 12, 2011, Kara McGuire wrote, “ Planning a wedding presents a natural opportunity to discuss everything from income and debt, to budgeting and establishing priorities. However, a recent survey from Country Financial shows that about half of couples don’t talk about handling the family finances before marriage. And money is a major point of disagreement for most couples, married or not.”

We encourage our brides to pause and assess their life goals and their financial situation. They need to enter into this marriage with honesty and clarity. If they can’t manage the discussion without embarrassment or honesty, we encourage them to consult a financial advisor to help guide the discussion.

We can help our brides create a beautiful wedding within their budgets. But we want our brides to “live happily ever after” and part of that scenario is getting their future financial house in order.

WEDDING NOTES™ – Gift Registries

If you ever doubted that brides were still using wedding gift registries, you only need to follow the pop news and track the choices being made by the bride to be with the biggest engagement ring – Kim of the Kardashians. At last count, her bridal registry was approaching gifts worth $200,000. For guests hoping to give a modest gift, there was a bottle opener for $195 that could be snatched up.

At the other end of the spectrum are many brides who are delighted to receive

wedding bands from the men they love and expect little else. In the middle is the vast number of brides who embrace the concept of helping their guests find a gift, which will symbolize their good wishes for the new couple. That’s the role played by modest businesses everywhere and chains that serve most of America.

With the impact of the sagging economy on many minds, we are seeing changes in selections made by couples in their gift registry. Registries are still being used because they are so helpful. But what is being picked for inclusion has changed a bit – as items always do.

Practical, useful, current – are adjectives being attached to the bulk of many couple choices this season.

According to CONSUMER REPORTS.COM and their 2011 Guide to Wedding Gifts, more and more couples are going for practical gifts – but don’t confuse practical with inexpensive.

Topping many lists are cooking knives – really good chef’s knives. And that makes sense, since a first rate knife in the kitchen is as necessary as electricity and running water. Also on the lists are video game consoles, single serve coffee makers and other small appliances, food processors, cookware (better and best sets) and vacuum cleaners.

For guests who don’t know what to give in spite of registry listings, the most current standby is the gift card. But know this, many of them are never used, so make sure that you give a gift card from the resource where the couple has their gift registry.

WEDDING NOTES – More Engagement Customs

One of the more interesting historical engagement customs was termed “flouncing”. It originated in England and was basically an early betrothal party. It was called a flouncing. It was held for the couple to meet each other’s friends and the friends of both families.

At the “flouncing” a formal contract was established and after this contract was sealed, neither the bride nor the groom could be seen with or talking to other suitors. Once this formal declaration was made, if either the bride or groom to be changed his or her mind about the marriage, the other could claim half of his or her property.

Formal engagement ceremonies or parties, common in many cultures, bestowed responsibilities. This concept grew into what we now know as “Breach of Promise” lawsuits.

In China, a betrothal was a serious family obligation. If an engaged man died before the wedding, his intended bride was “treated like a widow”. (Source: THE BRIDE’S BOOK OF ETIQUETTE)

Before there were department stores, jewelry and gift stores, and before the advent of bridal showers, brides went “collecting”. In fact, Finnish brides-to-be were considered “snobbish” if they didn’t go from door to door collecting their gifts in a large bag. The bride to be was accompanied by an older married man (the symbol of a long-lasting marriage). He wore a top hat and carried an umbrella, which symbolized shelter. The bride received her gift and her “escort” received a drink at each stop. Today’s version of this collecting is handled by Gift Registries at many stores and by bridal showers. However, the symbol of long lasting marriage – the old married man and his umbrella hasn’t survived into the 21^st century.

WEDDING NOTES – Engagement Customs

Engagements have always been about a time of preparation for the bride and the groom. There is much to be decided – where to live, meet the families and what to select to furnish a new home. While the needs are similar, there are many different cultural customs to help couples make those decisions.

The engagement ring or betrothal ring dates back to the days of marriage by purchase. It served as both a down payment on the bride and a symbol of the honorable intentions of the groom to be. In some cultures, the ring came in three parts. The bride to be wore one, the groom to be wore one and a witness wore the third piece until the wedding day. At the ceremony all three pieces were reassembled on the bride’s finger as her wedding ring.

The bridal shower traces its history back to Holland where legend has it a young maiden fell in love with a poor miller. Her father forbade the marriage, thereby denying her the traditional bride’s dowry. So the miller’s friends “showered” her with gifts to help the young couple set up housekeeping.

In many cultures, a matchmaker arranged most weddings. For example, in China, the matchmaker determined if the astrological signs were compatible. In Uganda, the bride’s elder brother and paternal uncle usually spoke to prospective grooms and negotiated for the family. While those customs seem strange in America, it might be fun to fine a way to honor someone who introduced the couple, or someone who was a very supportive friend with a special place at the wedding, or with a corsage, small gift or thank you toast at the reception.

Your first engagement gift is likely to be your ring although a ring isn’t necessary to be engaged. Diamonds remain the stone of choice for most brides to be, but other precious and semiprecious stones are considered appropriate.

When the budget is limited, many brides forgo an engagement ring and choose instead a wedding ring that may be plain or elaborate. Some couples choose a ring that will serve as both the engagement and the wedding ring.

Engagement rings don’t have to be new either. The groom to be may choose to honor his bride with a family heirloom ring or have family stones reset into a style of the bride’s choosing.

An old custom that is being revived is giving the groom an engagement gift. It certainly is not necessary but many brides are choosing to give their groom a personal gift like a special watch, a signet ring or leather bound edition of a favorite book.

In addition to your ring – or in place of it – your finance’ may give you a gift of your choice. It is usually something personal like earring, pearls, jewelry case, rather than practical like clothes, a car or money.

Gifts from family and friends are not expected at engagements, although persons very close to the couple may choose to surprise them with household or trousseau items. Whatever you get, be sure to respond promptly and in writing even if you said thank you in person when you opened the gift.

Invitation Etiquette

Our invitation specialists help brides create the wedding invitation of their dreams. They know that the invitation sets the tone for the wedding it announces and as such is an early indicator for the guests as to the type of celebration to which they are invited. Our experts field all sorts of questions and are knowledgeable about the various paper styles, font types and wording variations that brides are seeking. They are also asked about the appropriateness of certain wording choices. We know that more and more brides are making selections that blend the historically formal with the contemporary feel of today’s preferences. However, the rule of good taste does still have punch and invitation specialists are being asked if it is ok to ask for gifts of money on the wedding invitation. The answer is a clear and consistent NO!

There is no socially acceptable or tactful way to include in invitation copy the fact that the couple would prefer cash in place of gifts.

This situation is more likely to occur with a couple in their late 20s or early 30s who have been living together for some time prior to the wedding. They tend to have all household necessities and are not inclined to establish a traditional gift registry. They may be planning to buy a house and would prefer cash gifts. This is a worthy preference but the invitation is not the place to spread the word. For that they need to rely on word of mouth. The couple needs to tell their parents, friends, and members of the wedding that when asked about gift preferences, cash is the couple’s preference. But as Emily Post reminds us, “There is no dictating to guests what they must give; it’s their prerogative to choose.”

Our consultants recommend that if you are asked directly what you want for a wedding gift, be polite and say, “We’re saving for a down payment on a house, so if you’d like to give a check, that’s how we would use it. But whatever you decide will be terrific. Thank you for thinking of us.”

Not everyone is comfortable giving cash. They don’t like giving money. They prefer a tangible gift. And that is terrific. And because there are guests with this preference, we suggest that brides set up a traditional gift registry too to accommodate the guest who prefers to give a gift other than cash.

Questions for the Florist

One of the most important professionals you will engage to provide services at your wedding is the florist. As you begin to make service provider selections, we suggest that you consider asking prospective florists about the following areas. Their answers will help you to decide on which professional will best suit your tastes and needs.

Ask about their design credentials. Ask about the experience level of those who will be designing and creating your bouquets and decorations. Have they received recognition in any design competitions or been recognized for excellence by any of the professional organizations in the industry?
Ask to see the work rooms as well as the show rooms. You want to make sure that they have enough room to handle your wedding on top of other floral work, especially during the busy season.
Ask how they process/handle flowers when they arrive from the grower or supplier. Do they control water pH levels, add nutrients and/or antibacterial agents to the water to feed and protect the flowers?
Ask to see the cooler space. You want to make sure your florist has enough cooler space to handle and store your completed wedding flowers. Is the temperature in the cooler monitored closely? Are there backup coolers in case of a breakdown?
Ask about their delivery system. Make sure the delivery vehicles are clean and well organized so that your flowers can be delivered without damage. Is there adequate back up transportation? Are the delivery people aware of all the requirements for delivery and set up preferred by area churches?

Make your appointments to interview florists well in advance of need. Depending on the area of the country, the time of the year and the size of your wedding, you may wish to begin the selection process and lock in your preferred professional florist for your big day well in advance. Some brides book the date six months in advance and then schedule another appointment closer to the date to begin the specific floral selections.

I am doing interviews every single day right now as news reporters ask for my
speculations about:

To go on record with my GUESS….(and that’s all anyone can give!) I predict that Kate’s gown will be non-full (ever heard of THAT silhouette?!), very long train (but not 25 feet) and the fabric will be primo quality but unembellished…no crystals or embroidery. The gown will have an open neck (maybe for a very wonderful necklace?) and it will for sure have long sleeves.

I think her veil will be a part of the look that we will remember forever. Maybe filled with fine quality lace and much longer than the train. Now that would be quite a look!

I think her bouquet will be done in something bigger than a nosegay style and have no color.

Wedding Guests

We are frequently asked about the “rules” governing pre ceremony activities. Our experience often prompts us to suggest that brides ignore traditional seating etiquette when it doesn’t suit their particular situation.

For instance, it is not necessary to seat all of the bride’s friends on the left side of the church and all of the groom’s friends on the right. If the groom lives far from the bride’s hometown, it is likely that more of her friends will attend the ceremony than his. To give a more balanced look to the church, simply advise ushers in advance to ask guests if they mind sitting on the side of the church where there is more room. The parents of the couple should sit on their respective sides, but in some situations it simply makes sense to mingle the guests. Guest who are friends and family should be very comfortable following such usher requests.

We also offer additional advice to those who will be guests at weddings this season. Courtesy and consideration are in order toward the couple and their families who have chosen to include you in this very important day. To be a considerate guest, we recommend the following:

Arrive at the church at least 20 minutes before the ceremony – or 30-40 minutes if it is a big wedding.
Should you arrive unavoidably late, do not expect to be seated by an usher. Slip quietly into the church and stand at the back if sitting down would cause any disturbance at all. Strive to be unobtrusive and very quiet.
You may bring your wraps into the church with you but children only if they have been invited.
Dress appropriately.
Know that if you receive an invitation to the wedding and the reception, you must reply to that invitation as soon as possible. Etiquette says that no reply is necessary to a wedding invitation in a church unless you receive an invitation to a reception. However, if a pew card is included with your invitation you must reply to both the ceremony and the reception. The couple must know if that pew will be occupied. Failure to respond to a reception invitation is unacceptable and in bad taste so make it your practice to always respond to any invitation received.

c. Must meet with the Intern Class each week

Internship will cover fashion show preparation, visual displays, selling high end gowns, operations of bridal salon, assisting on site with weddings, weekly classes with the owner, an intern project to be completed in 90 days.

WEDDING NOTES – Plan for Happy Guests

Yes, it is true – there wouldn’t be a wedding without you, the bride. However, your goal besides being the center of attention is to host a party that guests will remember fondly because they were treated so well. Over the years we have collected ideas from our brides about what they did that made their guests happy at their wedding. We’d be delighted to share them with you.

Some of our bride’s secrets to happy guests.

When you create a gift registry at your favorite stores, be sure to include items that will fit everyone’s budget.
When you select your reception food, keep in mind that a number of foods are universally disliked. Foods like hot chili peppers, liver, Brussels sprouts etc. may be your own personal favorites, but if you serve them there will be lots left.
Pick centerpieces that are lovely and unique but not so big that people can’t see across the table.
Arrange pre and post reception transportation for those guests who can’t or don’t want to drive.
Work hard to personally greet every guest at the ceremony or reception. It means a lot.
Don’t forget to feed your photographer and musicians. Sandwiches are fine.
Limit the break between the ceremony and the reception to no more than one hour.
Have the band or DJ play a wide range of music so that everyone can dance at least some of the time. Some “golden oldies” so that your parents and their friends can take to the floor are a nice touch.
Consider integrating your single friends into table groups with people who share the same interests. A table of all singles isn’t the best arrangement.

More shopping, more shopping!

I’m excited about two new lines we will be carrying: Monet Couture jewelry (wait until you see it! and Marchesa wedding gowns…think Sandra Bullock at Oscars and put that into a bridal gown.

The Monet jewelry will debut with an ad in Martha Stewart showcasing what I think is the most beautiful necklace I have ever seen! Take a look! And it’s only $360.00???

In addition, I loaded up our always “empty again” jewelry cases in both stores with many other pieces from my favorite tucked-away spots. I frequent three of those sources so often that the owners all know me by sight….in NEW YORK! (That’s blowing a lot of their product out our front door!)

In other bridal news: the Lilly Pulitzer dresses are rivaled only by the David Meister’s in terms of being unique and quality, quality, quality. I could have bought every single one.
I love the Lilly’s that have the pastel linings. And the Meister’s are the perfect blend of sexy and still classic.

Today Tip Top Tux enjoyed the first day of being “officially open.” The faux finishers are working feverishly on my walls to get us back to normal ASAP. Headed home! Exhausted on this 9:30 p.m. flight.
Thank heaven for a waiting car as I don’t have the tread left on my shoes to walk to find my own at midnight. I always have a driver from Overland Limo waiting for me. It’s a perk that really makes the drive to the house a chance to decompress and check my e-mails before integrating back into the family…and life with bichons!

The market today was highlighted today by bumping into old friends, former employees who have stayed in the biz and visiting showrooms. One of my Possible Pick-ups is the collection of Eve of Milady. I haven’t carried her things in years but man are they beautiful…expensive but worth it. Eve and I had a great time catching up and she is anxious to have her gowns in Kansas City. I think I might be too.

Gifting Guidelines

We are frequently asked about gift giving and what is appropriate (required). Here are some guidelines we suggest for our brides and their mothers.

Engagement Parties – No gift required. That’s because engagements used to be surprise announcements rather than planned parties. Close friends and family may give presents if they choose. Since not everyone will bring a gift, any packages that come should be opened after – not during the party.

Bachelorette Parties – No gift required. Female attendants and close friends typically chip in to cover the bride’s expenses for the fun night out. Those invited should ask the hostess how they might contribute.

Showers - Gift required if you attend; no gift required if you don’t. However, close friends and relatives may still opt to give a gift. The best plan is to send it in advance to the home of the shower host/hostess who can give it to the bride at the shower. Ask the host/hostess where the bride is registered, if there is a theme to the shower or if there is anything in particular that the bride would like. Spend less than you would on a wedding gift.

Wedding –Gift required for sure if you attend. If you do not attend, the question to gift or not depends on the “expert” you consult. Most would agree with this solution. If you are friends with the couple, it is appropriate to give a modest gift when you decline. If you do decide to gift the couple, send the item to them ahead of time so they don’t have to lug it home from the reception. Base your spending decisions on local customs and how well you know the couple.

Second wedding –No gift required especially if you attended the first wedding and gave a present. Close friends and family members may choose to buy a gift for the couple especially if it is a first wedding for either the bride or the groom. Most couples in second marriages will make it known that they prefer no gifts and may even include that message on informal party or reception invitations sent to guests following a small, family only ceremony.

We’re growing…..some MORE!

Hitting the dusty trail….again!

In a previous life, I must have been a frustrated architect as I love to design and develop (a vision.) I am constantly designing i.e. a wedding, a bridal gown, a “plan.” I also love construction. Through the years, I have designed six bridal stores and after building our latest one in Briarcliff Village four years ago, I’m ready to do it again.

The store at Hawthorne Plaza has been here since the shopping center was originated. As a charter tenant, we joined Talbots and Statements, to break new ground in Johnson County when most of that area was still pasture. We have had two locations within the shopping center and I love our present location….but we’ve out grown it!

But relief is on the way as we expand that store in the next few weeks! But as with all my previous construction projects….it’s “no pain, no gain.” And right now we are in the “pain” phase!

The walls have been broken through and dust is absolutely everywhere! In spite of plastic shrouding….the floors and every level surface is coated! Gowns are still being sold of course, put the dressing room doors are kept closed between showings.

It’s exciting, exciting, exciting now as I can see my design coming to fruition! The dressing rooms and showroom are painted and ceiling and hardwood flooring go in next. Every evening, I sit in the rooms for a few minutes and visualize exactly where the furniture, mannequins and gowns will be placed. I can hardly wait to show it off!

The Bachelor Marries “Under the Rainbow”

As the father of three daughters, I have always thought the reality show, “The Bachelor” one of the most demeaning programs for young women I have ever seen. The desperation to “be picked” is incredible. I feel sorry for the contestants (and their families). They must have a very hard time living it down after the show airs.
But I can’t deny the audience it attracts…it’s my customer base. Thus I am obligated to watch enough of it to stay “current.” Tonight, the second bachelor actually wed and I had plenty of unfinished bookwork to justify sitting through it. And here are my thoughts:

Likes:
The lime green accents (something to save the same old, same old, black tea short dresses)

Molly’s bouquet. It wasn’t a “snow cone” style that so many florists push nowadays. The cascade of all white Casablanca lilies, phalenopsis orchids and miniature calla lilies had both drape and movement. I loved it. (But she carried it too high.)

The bride’s necklace. The multiple strands of crystals were really well proportioned to her plain bodice and balanced the layers of roses at the hemline. Very different.

The vocal processional. “Over the Rainbow” performed live by Jason Castro was not only catchy but timely….it had just stopped raining and the sun came out. Perfect.
I have used vocal processionals only a few times but they are always very memorable.

Dislikes:

The race to the altar that all the bridesmaids modeled as they hurried down the aisle. Slow down! Enjoy your walk!

The lopsided boutonnière on Jason. Why didn’t the wedding planner catch that?! Remember, if you’re using top heavy blooms such as double calla lilies…secure it with two pins. Not just one at the stem.

The absence of a bridal veil. The only thing that makes me think it was yanked at the last minute was the strong sea breeze. Molly’s hair blowing into her mouth was distracting enough. Like I say to all my brides when they ask my opinion of wearing a veil…”Don’t cheat yourself out of looking like a bride.”

The cheese factor….that has nothing to do with the wedding but just all the “stagey” crying over everything connected with the wedding. After a series of weeping jags that earned Jason “Biggest Bawling Bachelor Ever” title….wouldn’t you just know that he would break down when he saw her for the first time? So many guys do that naturally and it’s authentic. I hope guys who watched this don’t try to prevent themselves from feeling the moment now.

The return of Ryan and Trista (with her annoying giggle) only made the show seem more artificial but their wedding six years ago did re-popularize the use of pink. Lots of pink.
It will be interesting to see which elements of wedding planning the celebration of Molly and Jason our non-Hollywood brides want to incorporate into their nuptials. Come see me and we can talk about it! I have it T-vo’d

What arrived first? The Red Carpet or the White Aisle Runner?
Definitely the former. For generations, the fashion of the royal families i.e. Marie Antoinette, Elizabeth I, Victoria, set the tone that the middle classes would emulate.
In the U.S. we have searched for “royalty” since the days of Jackie Kennedy. There will never be another First Lady like Jackie, so what do we do? We elevate the movie stars to become our fashion icons….be they correct or a million miles “wrong.”

Our bridal industry is driven by what girls see the celebrities wearing. The entertainment industry has driven its own appetite what with all the awards shows now beyond Oscar i.e. S.A.G, Golden Globes, Emmys, People’s Choice. I swear but the Olympics didn’t get that much pre-coverage!
Each year some of the Kansas City radio stations call me the morning after for my personal “Fashion Police” report. It is flattering...but dangerous! Sometimes it is easy to stay “vanilla” with my remarks (and not offend anyone else’s opinion) but this year I can’t. There were some beautiful gowns! And I expect to see some of them inspiring next season’s bridal.
Everyone wants to know my Top 5…..so here goes!

#5….Vera ……I thought it was so “strong” which for the Oscars. There was no missing all the Fortney inspired pleating. And I loved the crimson color.

#4….Cameron Diaz….loved the all over glitter and I’m a nut for metallic’s.

#3….Jennifer Lopez…I’ve never seen her look softer. Loved the asymmetrical side draped
train. That was soooo different. I wonder how that might translate to bridal? There would definitely be a “good side” for the brides to remember when they are posing but the train would certainly be extended in the group photos where it is usually swirled around the bride’s feet.

#2….Sarah Jessica Parker….I don’t even like yellow and gray and I loved this dress. I thought the inverted neckline was gorgeous. Where so often the cleavage is way too distracting, this Chanel gown gave interest to her face with the beading under her chin. Also the back was so architectural…I’m sorry there weren’t more pictures of it from the back.

#1…Sandra Bullock…without a doubt! OMG…I can’t remember a more majestic gown at the Oscars!! The sheer bodice with the lace like vintage bugle beading was both light and yet “Wow!”

In general I was pleased to see the men go back to the classics….nearly all the A-listers i.e. George Clooney, Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Lautner, Steve Martin, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin to name a few, ALL wore black, single breasted tuxes. They chose a lay down collar and black BOW tie (as opposed to the long Windsor tie). Most of them finished it with a cumberbun in lieu of a vest. I don’t care how often I see that look…it’s like hearing “Ave Maria” every Saturday…how can it be anything less than “perfect?”

As for jewelry…there wasn’t anything worth mentioning but did you notice all the bracelets? All worn on the right arm.
“Worst Dressed?” Well, I’m just not going there.

Exciting new news from Nolte’s!

After four years at two locations with inventory split and not duplicated, we have increased our inventory and services yet again. Beginning today, Briarcliff Village will be home to all dresses of colour i.e. bridesmaids, mothers, evening gowns and cocktail dresses. All the colored crystal jewelry is there as well.

Hawthorne Plaza is now bridal gown heaven. All the wonderful designers we carry and all the gowns (from $1,200) are under one roof.

This new plan will make the shopping so much easier for our brides. They won ‘t have to go to both salons to see all the fabulous things Nolte’s offers. Thus now in one appointment, they can select their bridal gown and be assured that “there’s not something better out there.” In a second appointment (or walk in) she can bring bridesmaids with her to choose their dresses.

The Briarcliff salon is roomier and works well for groups. The Hawthorne salon has that boutique feeling that brides love.

To celebrate this new enhancement ALL the gowns of color at Briarcliff are reduced in price by 30%. (We need the rack space!!) This is a fabulous time to make a selection of the mothers’ gowns and your Rehearsal Dinner dress. We will run this sale until I can get the inventory thinned out a bit.

Thanksgiving Day

This is one of my favorite holidays with my family. We have decided in recent years to pull back from some of the racing around to either “Be Company” or “To host Company.” The outcome of that decision is the intimacy of just our immediate family, breakfast with the Macy’s parade in our PJ’s, an all day fire in the fireplace, a formal dinner in dining room and then a movie. We conclude the evening with either watching the Plaza lighting either in person or live on television.

Because our family has just increased with the addition of two, three- month old, Bichon Frise’ puppies, we opted to be home for the lighting (and leftovers!) Chantilly (a.k.a. “Tilly”) and Beaumont (a.k.a. “Beau” are definitely two full handfuls of maintenance but with three willing daughters, there’s always an empty lap.

Yesterday both stores were swamped (no need for a Black Friday, this week) and getting home was rushed. Mrs. Nolte and I attended two Thanksgiving-eve parties and were ready for the quiet of today.

The movie we attended was “The Blind Side” set in the present college of Daughter #2, Ole Miss. It was fun to have the back story of the family and the movie’s central character, Michael. The movie will be remembered as one of my Top 5 favorite movies…ever. The message is “Don’t judge by appearances. Wipe away the stereo-type and start fresh with each person that comes into our orbit.”

Leigh Anne is blessed with material “success” and Michael appears to be a slob with no potential for education. Both are the opposite once the labels are stripped away.

This film should cause each of us to question, “What am I doing with the tools in my toolbox to help the next guy?” It was a perfect message for this holiday.

For what are you thankful? My answer is usually multi-faceted and truly one of them would be “My career!”

I have been blessed with the best job in the world! I love what I do each day for engaged couples and their families. I do feel like it’s using my talents to make a more memorable and lower stress experience for a major family ”Life Chapter Moment.”

All that being said, I look forward, in the coming months, to sharing those skills, talents, gifts, tools (whatever you want to call them) with you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
